Osteoporosis

Factors that affect bone mass, determined and who are at risk for developing osteoporosis.

The factors that increase the risk of osteoporosis are:

• low weight and height;
• family history;
• poor diet;
• alcohol abuse;
• excessive consumption of coffee;
• sedentary lifestyle.

Additional factors that greatly increase risk are:

• prolonged treatment with corticosteroids;
• long-lasting hormonal disorders;
• naturally occurring menopause;
• premature menopause occurs, as well as artificial menopause after removal
Of particular importance to the development of osteoporosis are premature onset of menopause (45) and the operative removal of the ovaries at various gynecological operations. Many studies indicate that the risk for osteoporosis is greater in and Asian races. It is assumed that these racial disparities are due to genetically predetermined characteristics of the body – proportions, structure, bone metabolism (metabolism in bone).

Family studies also demonstrate the role of genetic factors for pre- empting bone mass. The daughters and relatives of women with osteoporosis have lower bone mass compared to children and relatives of women without osteoporosis.

Lifestyle and habits also influence bone mass. Smoking, high alcohol and caffeine are associated with a decrease in bone mass and increased risk of fracture of the femur. Many studies have shown that women smoke have lower bone mass than nonsmokers and double increased risk for fracture of the femoral neck.
